I wrote this in 1993. I was miles from home, away at school, and feeling sad. Started crying, and the
thought came to me: "
Let the salt tears flow". And it got me to thinking of salt, and tears, and
how it feels to be separated from those we love. And the result was a very nice song. And it surprised
me how much everyone liked it. And some say it sounded like it had been written more like in
seventeen or eighteen ninety-three!
NANTUCKET MAID

1) THE SALT IN THE OCEAN IS BITTER,
THE WIND FROM THE OCEAN IS COLD.
MY DARLING TRUE LOVE WAS A SAILOR MAN,
NOW, I HAVE NO ONE TO HOLD.

2) HE WAS A YOUNG LAD, ONLY TWENTY-AND-ONE,
AND I WAS A LASS OF NINETEEN.
WHEN HE SET HIS SAIL, TO FOLLOW THE WHALE
TO CLOTHE ME IN ROBES LIKE A QUEEN.

3) HE WAS MY FIANCE` AT TWENTY-AND-THREE,
AND I WAS BUT TWENTY-AND- ONE
HE VOWED HE'D COME BACK, WITH GOLD IN HIS PACK
TO BUY ME THE MOON AND THE SUN.

4) HE WAS A YOUNG HUSBAND OF TWENTY-AND-FIVE
HIS BRIDE WAS BUT TWENTY-AND-THREE.
HE WAS WASHED FROM THE DECK OF THE SLOOP "ROGER BECK"
AND HE SANK, IN THE BITTER SALT-SEA.

5) THE SALT TEARS I WEEP ARE SO BITTER,
AS BITTER AS SALT IN THE BRINE.
MY DARLING TRUE LOVE WAS A SAILOR MAN.
OH, WHERE IS THAT SAILOR OF MINE?
